Believe it or not, but our German Shepherd Sascha (Za-Sha) has a mild case of Pink Eye!
(Disclosure: I am not a Doctor, nor do I have any medical training. I prefer homeopathic remedies and have a lot of tried and true methods, but sometimes you need the script stuff and should always see your Doctor if symptoms don't improve in a day or two).
There are 2 different kinds of Pink Eye. One is because of a bacterial infection and the other is caused by environmental irritations. I fully believe that her pink eye is the later...environmental. She's been outside a lot lately and playing in a very dusty part of the yard. I tried method 3 for several days, it seemed to be working but she was already scheduled to go to the vet to be spayed so I went ahead and switched to the eye drops from the vet after her surgery.
Home Remedy for Pink Eye
(There are a few different mixtures depending on what you have available):
1: The old adage is "breast milk is best"....well it's great for pink eye. A few drops every few hours and it will usually clear up in a couple days.
2: If you aren't nursing or don't have a really great friend that would supply you with
breast milk then you can try this....raw milk & honey. Raw meaning not homogenized, 98% of people only have homogenized in their frig, if you bought it from your regular local grocery it's homogenized. If you're one of those health nuts and buy a lot of things at the health-food or all natural store then you might have what you need. Warm up the milk and mix in some honey; let it cool and drop that into your eyes every few hours. It won't work as well or fast as option 1 and it might leave you a little stinky and sticky.
3: If you don't have homogenized milk and don't feel like driving around town in search of some you can use water and honey. Boil the water to sterilize it, then mix in honey; let it cool and drop that into your eyes every few hours. It could take up to a week but in our experience it works. Of course you end up kind of sticky with this option as well.
*** The more pure the honey the better it will work.
